In the annals of ancient philosophy, Cicero's enduring parable of the Sword of Damocles resonates as a timeless allegory, encapsulating the precarious nature of positions of authority. Just as Damocles marveled at the opulence surrounding the throne, contemporary societies grapple with the chasm between affluence and destitution. The sword, hanging over the king’s throne, held by a horse hair, symbolizes not only the potential for social unrest but also the moral imperative to forge equitable structures that withstand the test of justice.
In this same way, the stone in this work, embedded in ice and hovering precariously over an arrangement of delicate and extravagant glasses, threatens to shatter them at any given time. As the ice melts and abandons the rock, revealing its surface, water drips in the glasses, filling them to the point of overflow. The glasses only aim is to collect as much of the cascading water as possible, and their disposition echoes the structured hierarchy and exclusivity that often characterizes privileged echelons, where these objects would typically be found in use. The fragility inherent in crystal alludes to the vulnerability of such societal constructs and serves as an invitation to question their fairness. The piece plays with the idea that wanting more always come with increasing risk.
The title, "Because life is short and you are too thirsty”, drawn from Adrienne Rich's poetic work “Atlas of the difficult world”, adds a layer of philosophical contemplation to the visual narrative. Rich's exploration of a difficult world resonates with the existential themes present in the artwork, inviting viewers to reflect on the transient nature of life and the urgency to address pressing issues before they unfold.
